How to Answer 11+ Antonyms Questions

An antonyms question gives you one word and asks you to find the option most opposite in meaning. It tests two things at once: whether you know the question word, and whether you can hold on to the word "opposite" while a list of tempting answers tries to make you forget it.

In the formats used in UK 11+ entrance exams, it looks almost identical to a synonyms question — a word in capitals, then four or five options. That likeness is exactly why children slip up: after a run of "find the same" questions, the brain happily picks a similar word here too, because similar words feel right.

The fix is a habit, not a talent. Decide what the opposite should be before you read the options, and check your final answer points the opposite way — not the same way — as the question word.

The method

  1. Pin down the question word first. If you can't say what RAISE means, you can't flip it. Put it in a quick sentence: "raise the flag — move it up."
  2. Flip it in your head. Ask: what is the most OPPOSITE thing I can think of? Up becomes down; raise becomes lower.
  3. Now find your flipped word in the list — or the option closest to it.
  4. Do the twin check. The sneakiest trap is a word that means nearly the SAME as the question word. Before you commit, ask: "same direction, or opposite direction?"
  5. Stuck on a hard word? Eliminate. Cross out anything unrelated, then test the survivors: "Could this undo or reverse the question word?" Pick the strongest reverser.

Worked examples

Example 1 — warm-up

Choose the word most opposite in meaning to: RAISE

A. lift B. lower C. carry D. shake

  1. Raise means to move something up.
  2. Flip it: the opposite of moving up is moving down — "lower".
  3. Twin check: A. lift means the same as raise. It sits first in the list precisely to catch anyone still in synonym mode.

Answer: lower

Example 2 — medium

Choose the word most opposite in meaning to: ACCEPT

A. receive B. reject C. expect D. admit E. offer

  1. Accept means to say yes to something — "she accepted the invitation."
  2. Flip it: saying no to it, turning it away — "reject".
  3. Twin check: A. receive and D. admit both point the same way as accept. Only B reverses it.

Answer: reject

Example 3 — harder

Choose the word most opposite in meaning to: CONDEMN

A. accuse B. praise C. ignore D. punish E. warn

  1. Condemn means to say something is very bad — "the head condemned the graffiti."
  2. Flip it: saying something is very good — "praise".
  3. Trap check: accuse and punish belong to condemn's world and point the same way — they are teammates, not opposites. Ignore is merely different, and different is not opposite.

Answer: praise

The traps

The twin. The single biggest cause of lost marks on this type: a near-synonym planted in the options — lift under RAISE, receive under ACCEPT. It feels instantly right because it matches the question word. That's the problem. Always ask: same direction, or opposite?

The teammates. Words like accuse and punish under CONDEMN come from the same story as the question word, so they feel connected. Connected is not opposite. The opposite usually comes from outside the story altogether.

Different is not opposite. Ignore is not the opposite of condemn; shake is not the opposite of raise. An opposite must sit at the other end of the same line — up/down, yes/no, good/bad — not just somewhere else.

Flipping a word you haven't pinned. With harder words like LENIENT, children guess the flip before they're sure of the meaning. Sentence first, flip second.
