Verbal Reasoning Complete the Word

A Complete the Word question hides one word in a sentence. Three of its letters have been taken out. They always come from one unbroken run. You find the three that slot back in.

The finished word has to be spelt correctly and make sense in the sentence. Both, every time.

In Compound Words the meaning is a trap. Here the meaning is your best clue. Read the sentence first.

The method

Five beats: cover it, say the word, match the letters, walk the gap, read it back.

  1. Cover it. Put a finger over the capitals. Read the sentence without them. "A heavy ______ soaked the garden."
  2. Say the word. Out loud, before you look at a single option. The sentence usually hands it to you. Meaning is the fastest way in.
  3. Match the letters. Hold your word against the printed capitals. Are they all there, in that order, with a gap for three more? If so, read the three off and find them in the list.
  4. Walk the gap. No word came? Then work the letters instead. Read the capitals out loud as printed. Where they stop sounding like English is where the three go. Try each option after one letter first. Then walk right, one gap at a time.
  5. Read it back. Put your finished word into the sentence and read it. It has to be a real word. It also has to fit the meaning.

About 25 seconds each.

💡 Worked example
A word in the sentence has had three letters taken out. Find the missing three letters that complete the word. A heavy SER soaked the garden.
How to answer

Rules to watch

Watch for these traps

If nothing comes, work down this list rather than guessing:

  1. Read the sentence again without the capitals. Is the missing word a thing, a doing word or a describing word?
  2. Look at the ending. Does the word need to finish -ED, -ING, -ER or -ABLE?
  3. Take each option and try it in every gap, left to right. Most attempts die instantly.
  4. Choose from what is left. Never leave it blank.
